Website Features

Submitted by ray on Sun, 03/02/2008 - 10:42.

I noticed that there's already a nice module to handle upcoming.org integration with the event system in Drupal. That would be perfect for us!

Also, the only issue I have with this theme, which otherwise is pretty awesome, is that it doesn't expose the RSS feeds to the browser. I'm assuming that's something the theme does, but I don't know!

Finally, the only other module I'd like to add is a better text editor for posts. But that's probably as simple as finding a nice module (or three) to offer that feature.

Thanks guys, for putting in the effort here. I'll put together an about page and hopefully we can get some content on this in time to launch soon.

couple of problems with this one

Submitted by lev on Mon, 03/03/2008 - 11:32.

There is no official release, and no updates have been made since July 07. Plus this relies on the events module, which we are not using, although we can. Basically, events and date/calendar are two competing options, I chose the latter. We can actually import any iCal feed into the calendar we are using, including from Upcoming.

I am seeing the browse feeds integration on my end. In the forums, the feeds are available at the container, not topic level (maybe we can change this), and all view/list pages have a feed available. E.g., http://pdxwi.levelosstage.com/blog.

Regarding an editor, do we want a WYSIWYG option, or something like Textile? If the former, I typically use TinyMCE and there is a great module for that.

Couple other things we may want to address before any type of launch:

  • profile fields - what to collect from users
  • security roles - currently just a generic authenticated role. we probably want editors and admins as well, and remove some features for the basic member role
  • about us / faq page
  • tagging - of what form and what content types?

Sounds good - thanks for

Sounds good - thanks for setting all this up! I understand the issues with the events, I'm sure we can just manually put them into upcoming like Adam has been doing all along. We talked about showing Google Maps, but that's easy enough, even if we have to just paste in HTML.

I think any editor is fine, I've no objection to TinyMCE. I'll think about the profile fields - are those fairly easy to change? Security should be fine with basic and admin (and visitor). Perhaps Adam can draft up an About Us kind of page, and we can add to a FAQ section as we go.

Finally, I noticed that the emails come from what appears to be your email address. Is there any way to make that generic? Just curious.

Otherwise, can we just point the DNS to this site in a week or so? We can just post a notice on the old site, and I'll keep a backup of it for now. Maybe we could at least move the old events into this system.

Are you going to be at the meeting(s) tomorrow night? Maybe we could chat for a few minutes then. Let me know!

I can wire up TinyMCE no problem. Are we sure we want a WYSIWYG and not something like Textile?

The profile fields are simple to setup and change, but you generally only have one chance to collect info from new users, so that should be thought through. I'd like someone else to take that on. It can be configured here: http://pdxwi.levelosstage.com/admin/user/profile.

Regarding security, who should the admins be? I can setup a basic role system, setting the current users as admins.

We can use any valid email address, but ideally it would have the same domain name as the site at that's best for minimizing getting caught as SPAM.

Whenever we are ready to launch, we just need to point the domain to 70.96.242.5 and I can update the settings in the control panel.

I plan to make the meeting, although I'm fighting a bug so not sure. I need to get my rest before SXSW this weekend!

Google Maps

Also, it appears there's a nice module for adding Google Maps to arbitrary nodes, which would integrate well with our Events.
